Framer vs. Webflow: Which is the Better Website Builder?
In this article, you will learn:
- Key differences between Framer and Webflow.
- Which platform is better for building complex websites.
- When to choose one platform over the other.
Let's take a closer look at the two tools!
Introduction to Framer and Webflow
Framer is a new tool that promises quick and easy website building for almost anyone. In contrast, Webflow has long been popular among designers because it allows for building not only simple but also complex websites. Webflow offers greater creative freedom but at a cost: it is slightly more complicated and has a steeper learning curve.
Getting Started: Interface and Usability
In Framer, you can easily insert basic components and ready-made templates. The layers panel is similar to design software, where layers stack on top of each other. In Webflow, elements are placed one after another, and the container holds the page content. Webflow is more flexible, offering various layouts and components that can be easily customized.
Layout and Design
Framer uses a "stack" system similar to HTML/CSS Flexbox, allowing vertical or horizontal element arrangement. In Webflow, containers keep elements organized, ensuring the design remains tidy regardless of page width. In Framer, you need to manually set the maximum width, while Webflow's container handles it automatically.
Interactions and Animations
Webflow offers advanced interaction capabilities, allowing you to create any animation. For instance, hovering over a button can animate an image. Framer, on the other hand, offers only basic animations like appearance or parallax effects, which limits creativity and complex interactions.
CMS and Dynamic Content
Framer's CMS system is close to Webflow's but less robust. Webflow offers more fields and custom collections for creating dynamic content. It allows multiple collections to work together, such as blog posts and categories. Framer CMS is currently more limited and does not support multiple collections integration.
Conclusion
Framer offers a simpler and faster start but has limitations for building complex websites. Webflow provides more freedom and capabilities but is more complicated to use. Currently, I prefer Webflow, but I am excited to see how Framer evolves.
