About the client
Myth Games is an online store specializing in trading card games (TCGs) — Pokémon TCG, Magic: The Gathering, One Piece Card Game, Disney Lorcana, and similar products. They wanted to turn their Shopify store at mythgames.eu into a mobile app, so customers could shop straight from their phones with push notifications and a faster, more native experience.
The Challenge
The goal seemed simple first: wrap the existing webshop in a boxed, Capacitor-based webview app to keep development fast and cost-effective, while still giving the app all the features that make it feel like a real app — push notifications, a native feel, and a proper account experience.
In practice, though, this kind of setup runs into a serious problem on Android: Google Pay doesn't work automatically inside a Capacitor webview, because payment providers expect a native browser context and don't necessarily recognize an embedded webview as secure. On top of that, we also had to solve for:
- getting the webshop to recognize whether it was being opened from the mobile app or from the regular web,
- making sure the mobile app didn't handle cookies the same way a browser would, so it wouldn't clash with the web session.
The Solution
Shopify Checkout Kit integration for Google Pay
To get Google Pay working smoothly on Android, we integrated Shopify's own Checkout Kit. This routes the checkout flow into a semi-native environment that payment providers trust, so Google Pay shows up and works natively — just like Apple Pay does on iOS.
Custom code in the Shopify theme to handle cookies
We modified the Shopify theme's code so the mobile app wouldn't break or get tangled up with the web session — a separate logic handles cookies depending on whether a given session comes from the app or the browser.
Environment detection: app vs. web
Logic built into the webshop's code detects whether a visitor opened the page from the mobile app or the regular web interface, and behaves accordingly.
Design: an animated, video-based loading screen
Since the webshop's design was already in place, the visual work focused on the loading screen — we designed an animated, video-based loading screen for the app.
Custom app icons for iOS
iOS lets users customize the style of their app icons (like the glass effect), so we created three different icon variants to make sure the Myth Games icon looks great under every setting.
Result
The app is now live on both the App Store and Google Play, with Apple Pay and Google Pay working natively — despite technically being a webview-based, boxed solution. The client specifically asked for this smooth payment experience, and according to their Trustpilot feedback, the development process itself was seamless and well communicated.
