A doctor's dream was that healthcare workers shouldn't have to face the emotional weight of their shifts alone. That dream became NIDUS, an AI-powered, conversation-based wellbeing platform – built by us as both a website and a mobile app, with the strictest anonymity principles built in from day one.

About the Client

NIDUS was founded by Dr. Richard Bromilow, who had long wanted to give healthcare workers – especially nurses and doctors working long, demanding shifts – a safe, emotionally supportive tool for everyday life. This isn't a therapeutic or diagnostic app. It's a digital wellbeing platform designed to help healthcare professionals process the realities of clinical work and sustain a healthier, more manageable practice.

The Challenge

At the heart of NIDUS is an AI companion named "ELLIE," who healthcare workers can talk to openly about their day, a difficult shift, or simply to prepare mentally for what's ahead.

That premise brought a few serious challenges with it:

• ELLIE needed to respond with empathy and truly listen, while never giving advice or clinical or psychological guidance – she isn't a psychologist or a supervisor, but a reflective companion whose job is to listen.
• These conversations can involve deeply personal and sensitive material (patients, colleagues, workplace situations), so the platform had to guarantee full anonymity – neither the NIDUS team nor any admin user should ever be able to access identifiable information.
• We needed to find the right AI model and provider: one capable of empathetic, non-advisory, fully customizable behavior that the client could fine-tune themselves, without needing developer intervention for every change.

The Solution

An admin dashboard built around full anonymization

Admins can see whether a given user has had a conversation with ELLIE, but every piece of personal or sensitive information is automatically stripped from the content. Admins never see who the conversation was about or what was actually said – only that an interaction took place.

Automatic deletion of raw conversations

Raw, unredacted conversations are temporarily stored with a third-party provider. As soon as the NIDUS system processes and anonymizes the content, the raw version is automatically and permanently deleted – so no identifiable data is ever left stored anywhere.

Finding the right AI provider

One of the biggest challenges was finding an AI system that matched the client's exact needs: empathetic, listening-first, non-advisory behavior that the client could shape and adjust themselves, without relying on developers for every tweak. We tested numerous AI providers before a third-party consultant pointed us toward the solution that finally offered this level of flexibility. This phase took a lot of time, but it paid off — the client can now fine-tune ELLIE's behavior independently going forward.

Website and mobile app, built as one system

Alongside the NIDUS landing page, we also built a native mobile app (coming soon to Google Play and the App Store) that brings the same experience and the same security principles to users' pockets – daily check-ins, reminders, and a personal "portfolio" that tracks reflective conversations over time.

Testing with the actual target audience

During development, we brought in nurses specifically to test the product, to make sure it delivers the experience that its target audience – healthcare professionals working under the daily pressure of demanding shifts – actually needs.

Results

Currently still in its testing phase, NIDUS has become an AI-powered wellbeing platform that offers healthcare workers genuine, empathetic listening, built on the strictest data privacy and anonymity principles – with no advice-giving or clinical involvement. The web platform is already live, and the mobile app is coming soon to both Google Play and the App Store.
